A large number of our pupils will have suffered Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and traumas, or be struggling to cope with social emotional mental health, additional and special educational needs. This is when our learners begin to find learning in a mainstream setting challenging and communicate through behaviour. In our Nurture Provision we work hard with our young people to understand what they find challenging, rebuild relationships and improve emotional literacy and understanding so that these pupils are able to return to school successfully. Our goal is to improve the lives and life chances of the children and families we work with.
A child can be referred by their school where they will attend a placement for 6 weeks (full-time). We provide an intensive provision packed with therapeutic interventions, a bespoke STEM based curriculum and emotionally available adults to model and support pupils in using appropriate emotional literacy. We work with our children to find ways to manage emotional regulation in a positive and reasonable way to pave the way for a positive future.
We use a STEM based curriculum which is 'made to fit' each child. We use a variety of desk-based and practical learning activities to engage our learners and offer positive learning experiences. We understand children's learning on a developmental level to ensure learning is accessible and the children can achieve.
We have a highly trained workforce who can offer daily therapeutic interventions such as therapeutic play, environmental arts therapy, Lego therapy, and write dance.
Staff are always researching and discovering new ways to support our children.
The centre offers high adult input of around 1 : 1.5 adult to child ratio. This allows us to quickly build strong relationships with our young people, model positive emotional literacy, develop strategies for each child, support pupils individually and in groups in learning, and provide time to talk.
The Edison staff offer Outreach to local primary schools. We will observe the child, meet with the team, meet with parents and write a report offering advice and support. We can even demonstrate interventions that may support school staff. If you would like Outreach please enquire or complete a referral.
"This has been a really helpful experience. We were at crisis point with two children and required swift observation and advice. The team were able to quickly identify the current challenges and offer support and advice with some clear next steps."
"It was really very helpful for an independent pair of eyes to see the challenges that we are supporting and to offer advice - When you are in it, it is often very hard to see the wood for the trees - The team were able to help us to do so. Thank you so much."
£55 charge for this service. FREE for EYFS.
We offer a 6 day placement (1 day per week) at our Forest school provision. We work on SEMH needs and social interaction between peers. We also really want children to feel success within their school week.
There is a charge of £55 per day (£330 in total)
Schools and families will receive a preassessment meeting and observation. On closing all stakeholders will be sent a comprehensive report of strategies to support their child further.
Parents and Carers will be offered a PIAS trouble shooting phone call.
Once a child has been referred to a centre, we then provide a pre-assessment meeting with a range of professionals, observe the child at work and at play, and meet with parents and carers. The child then visits their centre prior to attending. The centre will arrange for the school staff and parents/carers to visit frequently throughout the child's placement to maintain relationships. In addition to this, the centre will provide regular updates about the child's progress and a mid-term report for the school. After a child has completed their term, the centre will provide the school with a closing report, provide the school with detailed information regarding behaviour, safeguarding, next steps and individual behaviour plans. A member of staff will also support the child for x3 reintegration sessions at the child's mainstream setting.
We provide a range of internal and external visits for our pupils.
We receive visits from Plymouth Argyle F.C. coaches where they offer a variety of sports activities for pupils, building on teamwork and communication skills.
We are also visited by Plymouth Parkour, who work hard to provide a range of activities to engage the children and builds on skills such as strength, balance and focus, reasoning, confidence, problem solving, and spatial skills.
We go on trips to Routeways Devonport where our children engage in outdoor and adventurous experiences. We learn about our environment, have access to new opportunities and have the chance to choose what learn whilst we are there. The children work together to complete some activities and develop relationships with other children and adults.
As part of Discovery Multi Academy Trust, the Edison Centres are recognised as Mentally Healthy Organisation Award winners. The award, assessed and presented by Trauma Informed Schools UK and the Centre for Child Mental Health, was awarded to the Trust following an assessment which conveyed the Trust's dedication to pupil and staff mental health and wellbeing. “You can really feel the sense of emotional well being as you walk around the school and the calm caring yet playful relationships that adults engage in at all levels promotes emotional regulation across the whole school culture,” says Suzie Franklin, Education Consultant and TIS UK Awards Assessor. “The school’s ethos is focused around learning as the foundation for life, rather than league tables or exam results. Underpinning this is a comprehensive vision for students’ social, moral and cultural development. “There is Relationship Policy (for staff to ensure that interactions with pupils are reflective regulating and warm) and the school really understands the evidence-based role that relationships play in shaping daily experiences.
We are now in a position to offer our EYFS (Nursery and Foundation) Outreach to local Plymouth schools and nursery settings. We have an EYFS SEN Teacher and EYFS SEN TA who can visit your settings to offer advice around support for children with SEMH or other special educational needs.
This work can be for the entire setting or an individual child.
As this project is being funded by Plymouth City Council it will be a FREE service. Please call 01752 706360 (103) or email edison@discoverymat.co.uk.
